The old broken J.P. Luby pier has been replaced by a long jetty at the Packery Channel, protecting good rolling peaks from S winds on all tides and swells.

General: Packery Channel is a small, shallow draft channel that runs from the Laguna Madre (the flats and the Intracoastal Waterway) to the Gulf of Mexico on the southern edge of the J.P. Luby park. The jetties provide protection from the consistent side shore currents and provide above average sandbanks on either side. The north side is dominated by longer boards in the summer looking for a reprieve from the dominant South winds. While the south side can come alive on North East and East swells in the Fall through Spring. Tides: Medium Size: Waist to head high Wind: N, NW or W with swell Swell: S, SE, E Bottom: Sand. Paddling: Relatively easy for Texas, take the rip by the jetty out to the lineup. Spot Rating: Fun peaks and usually a respite from the longshore currents.

Crowd Factor: Most consistently crowded break on the Central Texas coast. Local Vibe: Positive, but sometimes over crowded with beginners.

This beach is party central during the crowded college spring break for cruising the sands in pimpoed 4x4s and tailgate parties.

Relatively clean.
