Overview
Afife is a consistent beachbreak on Portugal's north coast that gets likened to Supertubos, minus the crowds. Very fast, hollow peaks break left and right over sand, spitting surfers out of barrels all over the place, and the southern end usually picks up the most size. All that power comes with strong currents, so factor them into where you paddle out.
When It Works
Afife draws swell from southwest through north, with southwest swell the best match. The beach works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 3 m / 10 ft, and within that range it produces waves with real consistency.
Wind and Tide
Look for east offshore wind to groom those hollow peaks. The banks can work through low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call and low to mid tide the pick for the best waves.
Local Tips
Afife suits intermediate surfers. It's one of the busiest spots in the north, though compared to the beaches down south the lineup still feels empty.
Access
There's a car park with free parking, and the beach has a lifeguard.
