Afulu surf guide

Afulu is located furthest north on Nias. It’s a bit isolated, requiring a 15-minute walk from the nearest village or a short boat ride from the Hinakos. After the earthquake in 2005, the reef rose about 2.5 meters, which changed how the waves break here. You’ll need to wait for some decent swell to get this spot firing as it can be pretty hit or miss.

This place works best with south to southwest swells, handling sizes around 3 feet (0.9 meters) and up. Afulu is known for its left-hand reef breaks, which can be pretty fun but also shallow over dead coral, so watch your step when you're paddling out. The best wind direction is northeast, and it works reasonably well at low, mid, and high tides. Intermediate surfers will find the waves challenging enough to keep things interesting.

Due to its remote location, Afulu doesn't get as crowded as some other spots, making it a nice getaway if you're looking for some less populated waves. The walk to the beach keeps the crowd down, plus you'll likely enjoy some nice views on the way there. Just be prepared for the conditions and remember your reef booties if you want to protect your feet from the coral.
