Overview
Andrew Molera State Park sits at the Big Sur Rivermouth, where flow from the river keeps a gravel-and-boulder bar aligned into a semi-point setup. The payoff is fast, thin right-handers, with shorter, softer lefts folding into the rivermouth itself. Thanks to near-constant offshores it ranks among the most reliable waves in all of Big Sur, and it's a strikingly beautiful place to paddle out.
When It Works
The bank pulls in swell from south through west-southwest to northwest (S-WSW-NW), and a west (W) swell is the best match. It's usable from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft, though the rights line up cleanest when it's head-high and under. A bigger west or south swell helps knock down the backwash that can plague the spot. Summer and autumn are the prime months.
Wind and Tide
Tucked away from most wind directions, the rivermouth blows offshore on a northeast (NE) wind almost daily. It breaks on low and mid tide, with a rising tide the better call, and lower water also helps cut the backwash.
Local Tips
This one suits intermediate surfers and handles a wide quiver, from shortboards and fish through funboards to longboards. Expect a moderately busy lineup when it's on, with a very friendly feel in the water.
Access
Getting to the break means a walk of nearly a mile from the dirt lot at the park entrance. There's a car park with paid parking on site, along with restrooms and camping.
