Overview
Bolina is a fast, hollow right-hand reef point in São João, a town that runs straight on from the Lisbon suburbs and owes most of its surf appeal to three nearby reefs. Bolina is the most westerly of the trio and arguably the pick of them: a high-quality wave that breaks with real power over a shallow, uneven bottom of reef and sand.
When It Works
The point picks up swell from south through west-southwest to northwest (S-WSW-NW), with southwest (SW) the best match. It's usable from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft, which gives it a solid working range once a swell with some south or west in it arrives.
Wind and Tide
A northeast (NE) wind blows offshore here. Tide matters more than usual at Bolina: it's strictly a mid tide wave, and it generally gets better as the tide pushes in.
Local Tips
This one is for expert surfers only. The wave is quick and hollow over shallow reef, and the lineup is busy and localised, so it's no place for beginners. Expect to share the peak when it's on.
Access
The spot is well set up, with restrooms, showers, a lifeguard, and a surf shop close by. Parking is a mix of a car park and roadside spots, with paid parking in play.
