The area attracts surfers looking for different types of waves, depending on the sand banks, swell, and wind direction. It’s a spot that can cater to various skill levels, making it a decent choice for both beginners and more experienced surfers.

The surf here works best with an east swell, particularly from the northeast and south. It handles swell sizes starting from 1ft (about 0.3 meters) and can produce both left and right waves. North Wall is known for its scattered rocks, which help hold a right bank, especially when it gets larger. The right at the outside bar can be heavy, making it tricky when the conditions are big, and there’s strong river flow to deal with. On the flip side, the south side tends to offer more peaky waves with rights and lefts during the summer northeast winds. If the outside breaks aren’t appealing, you can also find gentle beginner peaks inside the rivermouth at Torakina Beach, which is a nice alternative when the main surf gets messy.
