Cap Fréhel is a beach break set below multi-coloured cliffs, and the drive up from Sables d'Or opens up several options. La Fosse at Pléhérel beach is the consistent choice, while La Grève d'En Bas is the better wave as long as you avoid low tide. The waves break over a mix of uneven reef and sand, throwing up both lefts and rights.
When It Works
The peaks and bowls come alive when a decent west swell rolls in. It draws swell from west (W) through northwest, with west (W) the best direction to aim for. The break is usable from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft, and it stays moderately consistent through the season, so you may sit through some flat spells before it fires.
Wind and Tide
Look for south (S) offshore wind to clean things up. Southwesterly wind is the one to avoid, as it makes the surf messy. It can work across low, mid, and high tide, but a rising tide is the better call, and La Grève d'En Bas in particular wants some water on it rather than dead low.
Local Tips
The waves suit beginners, so it is an approachable spot to get out. Expect a busy lineup whenever it works, with plenty of surfers turning up once a swell finally arrives.
