Chacopata surf guide

Chacopata is a surf spot located on the mainland of Venezuela, offering a change of pace from the hustle and bustle of Margarita Island. The area stretches along the Peninsula de Araya, providing access to various surf conditions. Known for being fully exposed, especially at el Morro de Chacopata, this spot attracts local surfers from Cumana looking for reliable waves. The combination of the terrain and the ocean conditions makes it a unique location for surf enthusiasts.

The surf at Chacopata works best with a north-east swell, but you can also catch decent waves with swells coming from the east. It handles swell sizes from about 2 feet (0.6 meters) and features both left and right-breaking reef waves over uneven reefs. The ideal wind direction is from the southwest, which helps shape the waves nicely. Surfers can enjoy the waves at different tide heights—low, mid, or high—though it’s mostly suited for intermediate surfers due to the reef and varying conditions.

In front of the Chacopata port, there is a longer sandy right that can also provide fun rides, making it worth checking out. With a reliable setup for the local surf community, it’s a good option for those looking to escape the more crowded spots around Margarita. Just be ready to manage the reef and understand the waves to have a good session!
