Chacopata is a reefbreak on the Peninsula de Araya, the mainland strip that stretches roughly 70 km (45 mi) under Margarita. Much of the peninsula stays sheltered by Isla Coche, but el Morro de Chacopata sits fully exposed, which makes it the closest reliable spot for Cumana's surfing community and a solid escape from Margarita's hype. It serves up both lefts and rights over rock, and there can also be a long sandy right in front of the Chacopata port.
When It Works
The wave breaks over an uneven reef and pulls in swell from northeast through east (NE-E), with northeast (NE) the best match. It's usable from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft. Consistency is moderate, so plan around worthwhile windows rather than expecting waves every session.
Wind and Tide
Look for southwest (SW) offshore wind. The reef works through most of the tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
Chacopata suits intermediate surfers, and both the left and the right give you plenty to work with. Expect a moderately busy lineup when it's on.
Access
There's free roadside parking, so it's easy to pull up and check the reef before you paddle out.
