Overview
Corolla Lighthouse sits at the northern tip of the Outer Banks, where a more extensive shelf than the breaks to the south trades away a little size and power. It's a sand-bottom beach break, essentially one big shifting sandbar rather than a set lineup, peeling both left and right. It rates below average overall, but the sand can still line up for something worthwhile when the swell cooperates.
When It Works
The break draws swell from south through north (S-N), with southeast (SE) swell the best match. It's usable from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 4.6 m / 15 ft. Waves here tend to run a touch mushier and farther off the beach than neighboring spots, and autumn is the most reliable season. Consistency is moderate, so it pays to catch it when the sandbars are set.
Wind and Tide
Look for southwest (SW) offshore wind. Because the beach faces a touch northeast, it handles a south wind better than most of the surrounding coast. It can work through low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is a forgiving, beginner-friendly beach that suits just about any board, from shortboards and fish to funboards, longboards, SUPs, and bodyboards. The lineup stays fairly quiet and can feel a little reserved. On the right south swell, holding your spot on the peak gets tougher as the paddle picks up.

There's a car park with free parking, along with a lifeguard and a surf shop on hand.
