Etang-Salé is a left-hand reef break that peels over live coral. It's often called the windsurfers' equivalent of St-Leu. The break sits along a black sand beach, with thumping close-out beachbreaks further up near the bridge.
When It Works
The reef draws swell from southwest through southeast, with south swell the best match. It's usable from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 4.6 m / 15 ft and handles the biggest swells that roll through, peeling left the whole way. Expect it to break consistently.
Wind and Tide
Look for a northeast offshore wind. A southeast wind blows cross-shore, but when the wind drops calm or swings northeast, barrels start to appear out on the fringing reef. It can work through low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is an expert-level wave. A severe current runs through here, strong enough to affect the close-out beachbreaks up the beach, so it demands real respect. Expect a moderately busy lineup when it's on.
