Lunada Bay surf guide

Lunada Bay is a well-known surf spot located in Los Angeles, California. This spot is infamous for its powerful, big-wave surf and is a local favorite. With a rugged, horseshoe-shaped bay, it’s one of the few true big-wave locations in Southern California. Accessing Lunada Bay involves a dirt parking area and a steep trail off Paseo del Mar, so be prepared for some effort to reach the water.

The surf here really kicks in when the swells are overhead, starting at about 6 feet (2 meters) and can reach up to 20 feet (6 meters). It primarily handles west and northwest swells, producing right-breaking waves that are both challenging and rewarding. The waves hit over boulders, making for a unique and powerful ride. It’s best with medium to high tides and is most reliable from November to February. The preferred wind direction is east, which helps keep the surf clean, while the rip currents can pull you towards the pocket and rocks, adding to the challenge. This spot is suited for expert surfers, and you’ll want to bring a shortboard or a gun to tackle the bigger sets.

It's important to know that localism is a huge part of the Lunada Bay experience. Many surfers here can be unfriendly to outsiders, so if you decide to paddle out, be ready to handle the local vibe. Despite the potentially intimidating atmosphere, the surf itself can be breathtaking when conditions align. The lineup often appears less crowded than you might expect, but the locals certainly defend their territory fiercely, so keep your guard up.
