Moon Bay surf guide

Moon Bay is located along the NE coast of Hainan, right between Haikou and Sanya. This area isn't the easiest to reach due to the poor road network away from the main expressway, but it's worth the effort if you’re looking for a laid-back surf experience. The spot is more about getting in the water and enjoying the ride than being a major surf destination, and while the scenery is nice, it's pretty industrial around here.

The surf at Moon Bay is generally best with a northeast swell and can handle sizes from around 1ft (0.3m). You can catch both left and right waves that break over sand, making it a suitable choice for beginners. Conditions are usually good when the wind comes from the southwest, and you can surf during low, mid, or high tide. Just keep in mind that the waves can sometimes close out or get a bit mushy, so be prepared for inconsistent days.

While it's not a premier surf spot, the beach allows for a fairly relaxed vibe, and with the right swell direction and conditions, you might find some fun waves to ride. Make sure to check the forecast before heading out, so you don’t miss out on those better days!
