South Stradbroke is a right-hand sand break at the northern jetty of the Gold Coast Seaway, the most easily accessible of the South Straddie breaks. A sand pumping operation on the southern side pushes 500 cubic metres an hour under the entrance to an outlet 400 metres up the beach from the northern jetty, and that steady feed of sand builds some of the best banks on the Goldie.
When It Works
The banks are set up for barrels, which are all but guaranteed on a head-high east swell. The best swell direction is east (E), though the break draws from a wider window running northeast through east-southeast to south (NE-ESE-S). It is usable from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 3 m / 10 ft and stays consistent across the swells that reach it.
Wind and Tide
Look for west (W) offshore wind. The bank works through low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call, and the cleanest barrels line up on a west wind through the middle and upper stages of the tide.
Local Tips
This is an intermediate wave that draws a busy lineup, and the water can have a bit of a temper, so it is not a spot for inexperienced surfers. It is a known bull shark hangout, and reading the current across the channel matters as much as watching for large boat traffic.
Access
Getting out here means a dash across the shipping channel, which is famous for as much shark traffic as boat traffic, so many surfers take the water taxi that runs between the jetties. There is a car park along with paid, roadside, and restricted parking.
