Stinson Beach surf guide

Stinson Beach is a popular spot located along a long crescent of fine, white sand. It's frequently visited by sunbathers and tourists, making it a pretty laid-back place to catch some waves. While it's not a hardcore surf scene, you can find some fun peaks here, especially when the conditions align just right.

The surf at Stinson Beach is best when the swell is from the south or northwest, handling sizes from about 3 to 7 feet (1 to 2.1 meters). You’ll find both left and right beach breaks that work over sand. The ideal wind is from the northeast, and you can surf at all tide levels—though working with low and mid tides often feels best. It's pretty beginner-friendly, but you can have fun on a funboard, longboard, or fish. Just keep in mind that the surf can be hit or miss; it usually ranges from waist high to overhead, so keep an eye on the conditions.

Access is easy—just take Highway 1 from 101 and follow the signs. There are usually people in the water surfing, but the crowds aren't too crazy. The vibe is pretty chill, and with lifeguards around in summer, it's a good spot to spend the day. Just be aware that there have been some shark sightings here, so stay alert while you enjoy your session.
