Overview
Surfside Jetty is a sandy beachbreak just south of Seal Beach, known for wedges that bounce off the Huntington Harbor jetty. The standout wave is the right breaking off the jetty at the north end of the beach, with heavy waves and heavy currents when it turns on.
When It Works
The optimal swell direction is southwest, and the spot can also work on south through west-southwest to northwest swells. It is usable from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft.
Winter is best on solid west or northwest swells from November to February, while solid south swells can also be good. West swells prefer mid to long-period energy around 16 seconds or more. It is fairly inconsistent, though overall moderately consistent.
Wind and Tide
The offshore wind direction is northeast, with glassy mornings and east or northeast Santa Ana winds also suiting the spot. Summer northwest onshores can become strong after about 10:00am.
Low tide is optimal, and a rising tide is better. Early mornings on a lower tide are the best bet.
Local Tips
This is more of an intermediate spot, with shortboards, fish, and bodyboards all fitting the waves. The peaks off the jetty can be highly contested, and the lineup can feel serious when it is on.
Be ready to paddle when the waves are working. Watch for heavy currents, stingrays, baby white sharks, tar, and poor water quality after rain.
Access
Park at Anderson Street and walk up the beach from the south. Another option is access through someone who lives in the gated community right in front. Avoid the PCH and guard-gate run.
