The Patch surf guide

The Patch is a beginner-friendly surf spot located at the end of Bolinas’ Overlook Drive. It faces southeast and offers a nice view to the south. The environment is pretty chill, making it a decent place for less experienced surfers to practice their skills without too much hassle.

The waves here tend to be on the weaker side, but they can provide some fun rides for beginners. It works best on low tide with big winter swells or big southerly swells. You can expect the surf to handle small swell sizes, around 1ft (0.3 meters) or more. The waves break over a mixed bottom of rock ledge and sand, and you can catch both left and right breaks. The prevailing north winds are offshore here, though don’t expect the waves to be very powerful or hollow, as they often lack that punch.

If you’re just starting out, The Patch is a decent spot to get your feet wet. It’s perfect for longboard sliders and allows for some gentle rides. Just remember, it may not offer the most thrilling opportunities, but it’s a safe place to hone your skills.
