Overview
Turtle Cove is a classic-looking right-hand pointbreak that breaks over boulders and sand. It's very sectiony, with multiple take-off points and short barrels running along the boulder-strewn lineup. There's also a short left directly beneath the lighthouse, which is under threat from serious ongoing erosion.
When It Works
Turtle Cove draws swell from east through south to southwest, with southeast (SE) the best match. It's usable from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 3.7 m / 12 ft, and at the top of that range it can hold powerful, double-overhead rights. It's moderately consistent, so expect worthwhile windows when the swell lines up rather than surf every day.
Wind and Tide
Look for west (W) offshore wind. The point works through low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call. Coming in around mid tide tends to bring the cleanest waves, with the fewest dry rocks poking up through the lineup.
Local Tips
This one suits intermediate surfers. Expect a busy lineup when it's working, though a strong, constant current often helps thin out the crowd. Camp Hero, now part of Montauk Point State Park, opens up less crowded surf if you're willing to make the long walk to the southwest.
Access
There are restrooms on hand, and parking is paid in a car park.
