Overview
Varazze is a powerful A-frame reef peak in a little town a half-hour drive west of Genova. The righthander is long and stays workable all the way to the inside, while the left is shorter but intense. A second heavy righthander, known as Back-door, breaks under the same conditions about 200 m to the east.
When It Works
The peak draws swell from southwest through southeast (SW-SE), with southeast (SE) the best match. It works from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 3.7 m / 12 ft.
Wind and Tide
Look for a north (N) offshore wind. Varazze is still surfable with onshore wind, but you'll want windless or offshore conditions for the cleanest barrels. It breaks across low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This one suits intermediate surfers. The wave breaks over a shallow, sharp man-made reef, so boots are a good idea. Expect a crowded and local lineup when it's working.
Access
On smaller days you can jump in from the pier, or paddle around the peak from down the beach. Parking is paid, with metered and roadside options.
