Zavial surf guide

Zavial is a small sandy cove located on the famous south coast of the Algarve. It’s known for being busy, especially with a local crew that keeps a close eye on the waves. When you arrive, you’ll notice the beach opens out at low tide, giving you space to take in the scene. The spot can get crowded, so be prepared for a lot of surfers in the water.

The waves here are pretty fast, often wedgy, and can be hollow, especially on the right point at the western edge. You can expect good quality right-handers peeling off the point, making it one of the top spots on the south coast. It works best with a SW swell and can handle sizes from about 1 meter (3ft) to 2.5 meters (8ft). The best time to surf is during mid to high tide, and it’s suitable for intermediate surfers. Winds from the northeast are preferable, and you’ll find that the bottom is mostly sand, making the paddle out fairly easy.

Zavial is busiest in winter, particularly from December to February, so if you’re planning to visit, get ready for a hectic line-up. If it feels too packed, driving around might help you find some less crowded spots. Just keep in mind that even if the waves are great, the local vibe can feel a bit edgy due to the crowd. So, maybe go in with a chill attitude and enjoy the surf.
