Overview
26th Avenue is a playful Santa Cruz beachbreak on the east side of town, with shifting sandbars and some rock reef mixed in. The stretch ends near the rocky reef peak at Little Windansea off Rockview Street.
It is a decent, fun option when you want a beachbreak change from the busier point-wave zones around Steamer Lane and Pleasure Point. Beach erosion is a concern here, with boulders piled along the shoreline.
When It Works
The optimal swell direction is southwest. The spot also breaks on south through west-southwest to northwest swells, with lefts and rights over sand and uneven reef.
26th Avenue is usable from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft. It is best kept to small and medium swells; too much energy can make it close out. It can hold slightly overhead surf, but anything bigger tends to get less manageable.
Autumn and winter are the main seasons, with clean, consistent west swells in winter. Small summer south swells and some spring windswells can also be good, though spring can be inconsistent with bad winds.
Wind and Tide
The offshore wind direction is northeast.
The break is tide sensitive and works best on low tide pushing back in. A rising tide is better, while too much high tide can swamp the break.
Local Tips
This is generally an intermediate shortboard spot. The paddle-out is usually not too bad because the waves break fairly close to shore, though cold water and shifting currents are hazards.
It can get busy when the peaks are good, and Santa Cruz has plenty of talented surfers, but the lineup atmosphere is generally friendly.
Access
Detour around the harbor and head for the coast. There is free roadside parking on nearby side streets, plus additional parking at Moran Lake Park a couple blocks north.
Water quality is decent, but use caution after heavy rain.
