2nd Beach (Sachuest Beach) surf guide

2nd Beach, also known as Sachuest Beach, is located in Middletown, Rhode Island, just a short drive from Newport. This beach is popular among surfers looking for decent waves, especially during the summer months. It's a go-to spot for many local surfers and those visiting from New England, serving as a reliable option when other areas might not be as favorable. The beach is quite accessible and has good facilities, making it a comfortable place to spend a day catching some waves.

The waves at 2nd Beach can be pretty solid, handling swells from about 2ft (0.6m) to 8ft (2.4m). The optimal swell direction is from the southwest, but the beach also picks up waves from the southeast. With a sandy bottom, the beachbreak offers both lefts and rights, catering to different preferences. The wind from the north is ideal, and the beach is surfable during low, mid, and high tides. It's generally a mellow paddle out, although bigger swells can make it a bit more challenging. This spot is suitable for various skill levels, including beginners, and can be enjoyed with a range of boards such as shortboards, fish, funboards, longboards, and even bodyboards.

While 2nd Beach is known for its consistent summertime surf, be prepared for summer crowds. It draws a lot of beachgoers and surfers looking for fun waves, so expect some company in the water, especially on weekends. The local vibe is usually pretty chill, though. Keep an eye out for occasional red seaweed blooms that can make things a bit unpleasant during the summer. Overall, this beach offers a solid surfing experience, particularly in the autumn and winter months when conditions can be better and the crowds are lighter.

Wind certainty

Wind certainty tells you how much the weather models agree on the forecast.

  • High certainty: Models agree closely; forecast is reliable.
  • Medium certainty: Some disagreement; conditions may shift slightly.
  • Low certainty: Models diverge; treat forecast with caution.

We calculate this by comparing wind speed, gust and direction from multiple models (like GFS, ECMWF, Arome, and Harmonie) and seeing how closely they match. They are weighted, meaning that some models count more than others, depending on how good they are for a certain spot.

Models and Updates

Surfnerd blends multiple global and local wind and swell models using advanced interpolation and spatial techniques to create an "ensemble" forecast. Forecasts are refreshed hourly.

Surf Predictions

Our AI-driven algorithm scores surf quality, shown by green, orange, and gray dots. Each forecast hour is rated for wind, swell, and tide quality, then combined into an overall score. Here’s the scale:

Perfect

Bad or No Data

Session logs also feed the algorithm — the more you log, the smarter your forecasts get.
