Aberavon Surf Forecast Guide

Overview

Aberavon is one of South Wales' most famous breaks, and its industrial backdrop of steel works sets it apart from its greener Gower neighbours. A breakwater here shapes the sand into a prominent bank that throws out a fast, wedging left over a sand bottom. It's a well-known wave that can hold a decent-sized swell.

When It Works

The bank draws swell from southwest through west (SW-W), with a southwest (SW) swell the best match for lining up those lefts. It works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft and comes into its own through autumn and winter. There's a genuinely good wave on offer when it's on, though the lineup turns rippy once the swell picks up size.

Wind and Tide

Look for an east (E) offshore wind to clean things up. For tide, high tide is the call, with a rising tide the better window as the swell pushes in up the channel.

Local Tips

This one is best suited to intermediate and expert surfers, and it takes everything from shortboards and fish to longboards and bodyboards. Expect a busy lineup with a strong local crew when it's working. It's also a designated jetski area, so keep an eye out for traffic in the water.

Access

There's free roadside parking close to the breakwater. Getting out of the water can be tricky at high when it's sizey, and while the water quality here has long been poor, it's improving all the time.
