Aberystwyth - Harbour Trap is a triangular boulder reef in Mid Wales, widely rated as the area's best wave. It serves up a long left and a shorter right, and it can turn on and get properly epic when everything lines up.
When It Works
The reef draws swell from southwest to west (SW-W), with southwest (SW) the best match. It works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 4.6 m / 15 ft, breaking over boulders and offering both left and right options.
Wind and Tide
Look for east (E) offshore wind. Mid tide is the pick, and the wave really comes alive on the push, so a rising tide is the better call.
Local Tips
This is an intermediate wave and not one for beginners. Strong currents run off the river, and the lineup is always crowded, so expect plenty of company when it's on.
Access
Park on the prom, where there's free roadside parking. You can paddle out from the beach or jump off the pier. When the river is in flood the rip is horrendous, so pick your moment. Water quality, once poor, has improved thanks to a tertiary UV treatment plant. Restrooms and a surf shop round out the facilities.
