Overview
Acid Drop is an aptly named right-hand reef that jacks up severely and throws a short, throaty barrel before it shuts down over the coral heads on the inside. It breaks over live coral, so making the drop takes plenty of skill and plenty of respect.
When It Works
The reef draws swell from southwest through southeast, with southwest swell the best match, and it holds size in any south swell. It works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 3.7 m / 12 ft. Expect it to be inconsistent, but there are worthwhile windows when a south swell lines up.
Wind and Tide
Look for northeast offshore wind. The reef comes in around mid tide, with a rising tide the better call, and the working tidal window is fairly short.
Local Tips
This is an expert-only wave that rewards patience as much as skill, so expect to queue and to commit fully on the drop. The lineup gets busy when it turns on. For a serious step up, the death pits at Heroins 200 m to the west are for pros only, while nearby Kukuiula Harbour and Allertons offer reef and beachbreak options with less crowd pressure.
