Algajola is Corsica's biggest wave spot, a beach break over sand that peels both left and right. It has long been a favourite of windsurfers and kiteboarders once the wind edges towards moderate, but there is a proper wave here for surfers too.
When It Works
Algajola draws swell from west to north, with northwest the direction that really switches it on. On a straight northwest swell with decent period it turns hollow and fast, peeling quickly down the beach. It is usable from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft and is moderately consistent, so it pays to watch the forecast for the right window. When the wind is light from the east through to the southwest, Aregno Beach is the better call, handling west to northwest swells of any size.
Wind and Tide
The workable offshore is a south wind. It breaks across low, mid and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better bet.
Local Tips
This one suits intermediate surfers. The lineup gets crowded and is laced with currents, so it is not the place for beginners. Expect a moderately busy lineup when it is on. On the way towards Ile Rousse a few other options are worth a look: Guinchettu at Marine de Davina is a quality rocky spot when the wind howls, while Bodri's two beachbreaks throw up fun shore breaks on smaller days before swell and wind overpower them.
Access
There is a car park with free parking plus roadside spaces. Behind the beaches you will find full facilities, including restrooms, showers, a lifeguard and big campsites, along with surf schools and surf shops.
