Anecho surf guide

Anecho is a surf spot located along the coast, just east of the beautiful German colonial town of Anécho (or Aného), near the border of Benin. It features a straight beach break and a few short jetties. The area is gaining popularity among both locals and expats, but it’s generally still chill and not overly crowded, making it an inviting place to paddle out.

The surf at Anecho can work well with south swell, and it can handle sizes as small as 1ft (0.3 meters). You're likely to catch mainly right-hand waves here, and the breaks happen over sand, which makes for a softer landing. The preferred wind direction is north, and low tide is when the waves seem to offer their best performance. You can expect a mix of slower shoulders and some quicker closeouts. It’s a bit fickle, though, so keep an eye on the conditions if you want to score good waves. This spot is better suited for intermediate surfers, so if you're still learning, make sure you're comfortable with your skills before heading out.

Be aware that the area has some rips, which can add to the challenge. The jetties play a role in shaping the waves, especially the end jetty that protects the rivermouth, and this can create longer, hollow rights down the sandbar. It's a good idea to check the local conditions and talk to fellow surfers to get the most out of your session here.

Wind certainty

Wind certainty tells you how much the weather models agree on the forecast.

  • High certainty: Models agree closely; forecast is reliable.
  • Medium certainty: Some disagreement; conditions may shift slightly.
  • Low certainty: Models diverge; treat forecast with caution.

We calculate this by comparing wind speed, gust and direction from multiple models (like GFS, ECMWF, Arome, and Harmonie) and seeing how closely they match. They are weighted, meaning that some models count more than others, depending on how good they are for a certain spot.

Forecast Cheat Sheet

Short on time? Focus on wave energy. It’s the best single metric to gauge how big and powerful the waves will be.

Click any table cell to jump to that forecast hour. The map will update with forecast arrows, so you can see if wind and swell direction are lining up.

Use the table sidebar to switch units for height and speed.

Log your surf sessions to compare forecasts with real sessions and sharpen future predictions.

On the map, click a metric label to bring that arrow to the front — handy when arrows overlap.

Models and Updates

Surfnerd blends multiple global and local wind and swell models using advanced interpolation and spatial techniques to create an "ensemble" forecast. Forecasts are refreshed hourly.

Surf Predictions

Our AI-driven algorithm scores surf quality, shown by green, orange, and gray dots. Each forecast hour is rated for wind, swell, and tide quality, then combined into an overall score. Here’s the scale:

Perfect
Good
Average
Bad or No Data

Session logs also feed the algorithm — the more you log, the smarter your forecasts get.
