Overview
Aquin Islands – Grande Cay Aquin is a speedy short right-hander with a critical takeoff and a bowling section. It breaks over a rock ledge and sand on the lee side of Grande Cay Aquin, giving you a fast, punchy reef wall that rewards surfers who can match its pace.
When It Works
The reef draws swell from the east through south (E-S), with southeast (SE) swell the best match. It works from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft. It picks up swell moderately often, so plan around the windows when the setup lines up rather than counting on surf every day.
Wind and Tide
Look for northwest (NW) offshore wind to clean up the face. The wave breaks on low and mid tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This one suits intermediate surfers who are comfortable with a critical takeoff and a quick, bowling section. The lineup stays quiet, so expect plenty of room when it's on.
Access
Getting here means a boat from Aquin over to the lee side of Grande Cay Aquin, then following footpaths to the south side of the island. There are more good reefs to the west if you feel like exploring, and plans are in place to develop a cruise ship port here.
