Overview
Atacames is a fun, tourist-focused beachbreak that peels along the sand right in front of a strip of lively beach bars. It breaks over a sandy bottom and throws up both lefts and rights, and it ranks highly for pure enjoyment. It draws a mix of surfers and swimmers, so a bit of caution goes a long way.
When It Works
Atacames needs a northwest or a strong west swell to get going. It picks up swell from the southwest through to the northwest, with northwest (NW) the direction that lights it up best. The beachbreak works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft, and it is moderately consistent, so it shows up often enough without being a sure thing on any given day.
Wind and Tide
Look for a southeast (SE) offshore wind to clean things up. The bank works across low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call. The shape shifts with the tide too: expect barrels down at low tide and longer rides up at high.
Local Tips
This is an approachable, beginner-friendly wave, so it suits surfers still finding their feet. Expect a busy lineup when it works, with plenty of people swimming in the water alongside the surf. Keep an eye on water quality, as runoff from the river can leave it looking dubious.
Access
There is plenty on hand at the beach, including restrooms, showers, a lifeguard, and a surf school. Parking is free, with roadside spots to leave the car.
