Baie d'Italy is a little-known beachbreak in the wild west of Fort Dauphin, and it plays more forgiving than nearby Vinanibe, which makes it a good fit for intermediate surfers. Waves break over sand and peel both left and right, and wandering sand banks can line up into some genuinely perfect peaks when the setup cooperates.
When It Works
The break draws swell from southwest through southeast, with southwest swell the best match. It's a consistent spot that works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft. Keep an eye on the sand banks, since where they set up decides where the best peaks break.
Wind and Tide
Look for northeast offshore wind to clean up the faces. The bank can work through low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
