Overview
Baleal is a sandy little island village a couple of miles north of Peniche, and it has been a big stop for traveling surfers for decades. Because it is an island, there is almost always a protected beach nearby.
The setup mixes the mellow left reefbreak of Lagide just north of town with miles of open beachbreak, plus a protected bay south of town with mediocre beachbreak sheltered from north winds and huge swells. Most of the bottom is sand, except for the reef at Lagide.
When It Works
Baleal likes west-northwest swell, with northwest to north swell also in the mix. It works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 2.1 m / 7 ft, with head-high surf noted as a common size reference.
Autumn and spring are the main seasons. Winter can still have surf, but wind and weather can be issues.
Wind and Tide
The offshore wind direction is south-southeast. The broader workable wind window runs from south-southwest to east-southeast.
Mid to lower tide is typically best, and a rising tide is better.
Local Tips
Baleal is beginner-friendly and works with shortboards, funboards, longboards, and fish. Most learn-to-surf camps in Portugal are based around here, so avoiding the surf schools can help keep things easier.
Crowds are the main hazard. Lagide can be tense and busy, so be respectful if you paddle out there and do not drop in on bodyboarders. Away from the surf schools and Lagide, crowds are usually less of a problem.
Access
There is a big parking lot right at Lagide, where campers often gather. The beachbreaks to the north are reached by a dirt track running along the coast.
