Bay of Plenty (Durban) surf guide

Bay of Plenty is a popular surf spot located in Durban. It's known for its sandy beach and decent waves, which can be appealing for surfers of various skill levels. While it used to be the best wave in town and a main contest site, the shifting sand has made it a bit more sectiony and less consistent than spots like North Pier or New Pier. However, it still draws a crowd, especially when the conditions are right.

The optimal swell direction here is from the Southeast, but it can handle swells from the Northeast and Southwest as well. The waves generally break over sand, offering both lefts and rights. On a good day, you'll find some nice rights that can run for about 200m, allowing for some fun rail work and short tubes. It can handle swell sizes up to 3ft (approximately 0.9 meters), making it suitable for beginners, especially with the right wind coming from the west. The tide can vary, but low, mid, and high tides all have their moments here, with peaks likely up the beach and the usual inside left bowl at high tide.

While it can get crowded, it’s worth noting that the vibe here is generally friendly, unlike some other busy spots. So, if you're looking for a mellow session with some fun waves, Bay of Plenty is a decent choice, provided you're okay with the occasional crowd.

Wind certainty

Wind certainty tells you how much the weather models agree on the forecast.

  • High certainty: Models agree closely; forecast is reliable.
  • Medium certainty: Some disagreement; conditions may shift slightly.
  • Low certainty: Models diverge; treat forecast with caution.

We calculate this by comparing wind speed, gust and direction from multiple models (like GFS, ECMWF, Arome, and Harmonie) and seeing how closely they match. They are weighted, meaning that some models count more than others, depending on how good they are for a certain spot.

Forecast Cheat Sheet

Short on time? Focus on wave energy. It’s the best single metric to gauge how big and powerful the waves will be.

Click any table cell to jump to that forecast hour. The map will update with forecast arrows, so you can see if wind and swell direction are lining up.

Use the table sidebar to switch units for height and speed.

Log your surf sessions to compare forecasts with real sessions and sharpen future predictions.

Models and Updates

Surfnerd blends multiple global and local wind and swell models using advanced interpolation and spatial techniques to create an "ensemble" forecast. Forecasts are refreshed hourly.

Surf Predictions

Our AI-driven algorithm scores surf quality, shown by green, orange, and gray dots. Each forecast hour is rated for wind, swell, and tide quality, then combined into an overall score. Here’s the scale:

Session logs also feed the algorithm — the more you log, the smarter your forecasts get.
