Overview
Beacons is a dependable reef setup tucked among higher-profile North San Diego County breaks like Swamis and Cardiff Reef. It can suit a wide range of surfers: small, weak days are popular with beginners, while bigger swells break farther out on the rock reef and can produce quality lefts and rights.
The bottom is a flat rock reef with patches of sand and sea grass, and it is one of the more mellow reef setups in this wave-rich stretch.
When It Works
Beacons is usable from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft. Chest-high to slightly overhead is especially good here.
It picks up swell from south through west-southwest to west-northwest, and a good west swell is the standout call. Autumn is best, when early-season west swells can line up with offshore Santa Ana conditions, but the spot can also be fun in summer and winter. It can pick up local windswell when nearby spots are lacking long-period swell.
Wind and Tide
The offshore wind direction is east-northeast. The workable wind window runs from northeast to east, with southeast also noted as a useful direction.
Low going high is ideal, and low to mid tide with a rising tide is the better window.
Local Tips
Beacons is usually busy rather than empty, but it is not as crowded as Swamis. The lineup sees a steady mix of newer surfers and longtime regulars, and the atmosphere is generally neutral. It is not an aggressive zone, but you should know what you are doing before paddling out when there is size.
Shortboards, fish, funboards, and longboards all have a place here depending on the conditions.
Watch for reef injuries and rocks. After winter rains, urban runoff can be an issue around this part of the coast.
Access
Park in the main lot off Neptune Avenue or along the street, then walk the path down to the beach. San Elijo State Beach is nearby and can be a good option for van-based surfers.
