Overview
Bert's Bar is a sandy beach break on Sullivan's Island, tucked at the end of the south causeway just below the Isle of Palms. Its peak sits right next to the shipping channel, so there's deep water just offshore that can lend the wave real punch. Expect scattered peaks that break both left and right. Shoaling has reshaped the area over the years and worthwhile surf has become rare, so it's best thought of as an occasional-reward spot rather than a reliable one.
When It Works
Bert's Bar draws swell from east to south and works from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft. The better windows tend to arrive in autumn, spanning late summer, early fall, and into early spring. When it does line up, the deep water along the channel edge can square up a surprisingly heavy wave for the size, with an against-the-grain bounce that gives the peaks some bite.
Wind and Tide
Look for northwest offshore wind, with a workable window running from west-northwest to north. One quirk here is that it can stay offshore even when it's howling side- or onshore everywhere else, and northeast winds come in side-offshore. It breaks best on mid to high tide, and a rising tide is generally the better call.
Local Tips
The spot suits a wide range of gear, from shortboards and fish to funboards, longboards, and SUPs, and it's approachable for everyone from beginners through to experts. Expect a moderately busy lineup when it works, and the atmosphere can feel a little reserved. On bigger swells a strong north current sets up, so be ready for a drifty session and plan your paddle around it. Keep an eye out for the odd sea creature, and note that runoff can bring some pollution after heavy rain.

There's lots of parking, though it fills with cars through summer and on big northeast swells.
