Overview
Big Rivermouth sits at the mouth of the Big River's 1,500-acre estuary, right beside the town of Mendocino. It's a washy, shallow beachbreak over sand that peels both left and right, and it's easy to size up straight from Highway 1. The waves tend to run sectiony and walled, so it's a modest performer overall, but when the rest of the coast is flat it can still serve up some fun peaks.
When It Works
Big River draws swell from the south through to the north and is usable from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft. It comes into its own on small, peaky swells rather than big days, with autumn into winter the season to watch. Consistency and quality sit on the modest side here, so think of it as a handy fallback rather than the main event.
Wind and Tide
Look for east offshore wind to clean things up. The rivermouth is best at high tide, and a rising tide is generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is a friendly beginner spot, with a wide, sandy beach exposed as the tide drops. Funboards, longboards, and fish all suit the mellow, sectiony waves. The lineup stays fairly quiet and can feel a little reserved. Keep the usual rivermouth hazards in mind, as rips and sharks come with the territory.
Access
Park in the lot behind the church and take the staircase down to the beach.
