Overview
Blackbeard Island is a remote, sand-bottom beach break on a Georgia wildlife refuge, sitting roughly 18 miles from Shellman's Bluff. It can serve up a fun little wave on its day, but it is a below-average spot and not a real surf destination. Camping and fires are off limits, though you're free to hike or bike the island's interior.
When It Works
The bank throws both rights and lefts over sand, drawing swell from northeast to southeast (NE-SE). It works from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft, and autumn is the most reliable stretch for finding something worth paddling out for.
Wind and Tide
Look for northwest (NW) offshore wind, with a workable wind window running from west-northwest to north-northwest. The break comes to life on mid to high tide, and a rising tide is generally the better call.
Local Tips
Expect a quiet, reserved lineup with little competition for waves. It's approachable for beginners through experts, and the mellow beach break suits just about anything, from shortboards and fish to funboards, longboards, and SUPs.
Access
The only way in is by water, so plan on a boat or kayak. Blackbeard is reached from the north end of Sapelo Island, itself a boat trip, near the primitive Cabretta campground. Come prepared: strong currents can kick up when the wind blows hard from the northeast or southwest, sea creatures are around, and there's no one nearby to help if you get hurt.
