Overview
Brandons is a sand-covered reef break on the south coast of Barbados, just outside Bridgetown. It is best known for long, rolling lefts, groomed and speedy with the odd tuck section and a legitimate bowl on the inside, while the rights tend to be shorter and rounder. The result is a fun, user-friendly wave that holds something for just about any level.
When It Works
The reef pulls in swell from east to south (E-S), with southeast (SE) the direction it likes best. Windswell wrapping around the southeast corner of the island and South Atlantic groundswell both do the job, and it comes alive on bigger hurricane and southeast windswells. It is usable from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft, roughly chest high to overhead. Expect surf across summer, autumn, and winter: summer brings tropical cyclone and trade swells, winter the trade swells. Consistency is moderate, but the quality is decent when it lines up.
Wind and Tide
Normal trade winds blow northeast (NE) and groom it clean, so the island's prevailing onshores actually turn offshore here. It breaks through low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide the better call. Paddling can be some work once there is size.
Local Tips
Grab a shortboard. It is approachable enough for beginners, especially when summer serves up softer, sloppier days. Expect a moderately busy lineup when it is working, and it is a spot the town locals care about, so a bit of respect in the water goes a long way.
Access
Head past the horse track and look for the colonial fort ruins to find it. There is a lifeguard and a surf shop nearby, plus a car park with free parking and roadside parking.
