More about Brighton - Marina surfspot
Crowded, shallow chalk and flint reef sheltered from SW gales (the only time it works) by the marina pier. Busy, rippy and localised.
General: Popular spot for Brighton surfers who congregate here in a SW storm swell, when the eastern side of the marina offers a sheltered corner for clean / semi-clean waves. They can be long and fun, but tend to be a bit on the slow and fat side, reforming as they roll. There's a rip to aid the paddle out by the harbour wall. Can get unruly and heavy in big storms. Tides: Low to near high. Size: Thigh high to overhead. Wind: N, NE. Swell: W or SW Bottom: Chalky, flinty reef with high tide shingle. Paddling: OK when small, long paddle when bigger. Spot Rating: Fickle, fun, long, fat rolling waves that come to life in windy, stormy conditions - occasionally gets good when a big, clean, long distance groundswell rolls in.
Not really a place for beginners due to crowds, groynes and reef.
Limited local parking available.
December - February as it needs big swells or storms.
Crowd Factor: There's a large, hard-core local crew who scour the forecast and will be on it. Local Vibe: Competitive.
Parking at top of The Cliff or down Cliff Rd, access can be disrupted by ongoing sea defence work.
Can be poor after rains.
Rips, crowd, groynes.
