Broken Head surf guide

Broken Head is a surf spot located near Byron Bay, known for its scenic beauty and laid-back vibe. The area features a mix of beach breaks and a point break that attracts surfers of different skill levels. It's an appealing spot for those looking to escape the more crowded beaches in the area. While it doesn’t always deliver epic conditions, when everything aligns, it can offer some fun waves.

This spot works best with a NorthEast swell, handling sizes around 1ft (0.3 meters). The waves break over an uneven reef and sand, creating both right point breaks and lefts. The setup here tends to be quite spread out, so you've got room to maneuver. Ideally, you'll want to surf on low to mid tides, with winds coming from the SouthWest. Many surfers consider Broken Head more of a summer spot since it requires a bit of sand buildup along the shoreline for the best waves.

The beach breaks cater to all abilities, but the main point break is better suited for intermediate surfers looking for a bit of a challenge. The area has its unique vibe, partly because of its history—many surfers here have been around since the days when Byron was a haven for the original hippie crowd. If you’re around on smaller swell days, the beautiful pocket beaches along the cliffs of Seven Mile Beach Drive are worth exploring for a quieter surf experience.
