Overview
Brunswick Heads is a rivermouth beach break at the mouth of the Brunswick River, where breakwalls on each side hold sand into banks that break over sand. There's something for everyone here, with both rights and lefts on offer depending on how the banks, swell, and wind line up.
When It Works
The spot draws swell from northeast through east-southeast to south (NE-ESE-S), with east swell the best match, and it works from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 3.7 m / 12 ft. Consistency is moderate. The old adage of north wall in southerlies and south wall in northerlies holds true: North Wall has scattered rocks that help hold a right bank, while the south side turns peakier with rights and lefts in the summer northeasters. When it gets really big, a heavy right unloads over the outside "Bar" deposited by the strong river flow, though the sweep in those conditions is legendary and getting out the back is nearly impossible, so few take it on. When the outside is a big mess, there's the option of surfing the gentle inside peaks at Torakina Beach.
Wind and Tide
Look for west offshore wind. It can work through low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call. High tides tend to be fatter when the surf is small.
