Buarcos Surf Forecast Guide

Overview

Buarcos is a right-hand point that unfurls along the headland north of Figueira da Foz, breaking over reef and sand-covered rock. Several distinct waves line the point: Tamagueira, a hollow right; Teimoso, a long right point; and Mina, the reef furthest north. When sand and swell line up just right, they can link into a single, reeling right-hander that ranks among the longest waves in Portugal, throwing top-to-bottom walls and barrel sections for over 200 metres.

When It Works

This is a big-swell wave that needs a solid northwest swell to wake up, and it draws swell from west-southwest through northwest (WSW-NW). It works from 1.2 m / 4 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft. Because it leans on those bigger winter swells, the prime window runs December through February. On its day, it stands as one of the best waves on the continent.

Wind and Tide

Look for offshore wind out of the north-northeast (NNE), with a workable wind window spanning north to northeast (N-NE). It breaks across all tides, though a rising tide is generally the better call.

Local Tips

With powerful waves, rocks, and rips in the mix, plus long paddles that can leave your arms noodled, this one suits intermediate and expert surfers. Shortboards, fish, longboards, and bodyboards all have a place here. It's a huge playing field, so even on a busier day the lineup stays fairly quiet and can feel strangely uncrowded, with a reserved, competitive-but-respectful feel in the water. Water quality can be poor, as the area still suffers from raw sewage discharge.

Access

There's ocean-front parking at Teimoso.
