Overview
Bulak Benda is a serious open-ocean right on Java's south coast, about a 40-minute drive from Batu Karas. It's one of those far-flung breaks exposed to every swell window, and it only gets better as it gets bigger. On its day it fires off fast, hollow barrels reeling across a shallow, uneven reef ledge, an experience reserved for experienced surfers who can handle a heavy wave.
When It Works
Bulak Benda draws swell from anywhere between south and west (S-W), with southwest (SW) the direction that really switches it on. Getting that swell angle right is the difference between a flat day and a firing one. It works from 1.2 m / 4 ft to 3.7 m / 12 ft, and being wide open to the ocean, it comes into its own as the swell builds toward the bigger end of that range. Consistency is moderate, so it pays to time your window.
Wind and Tide
Look for northwest (NW) offshore wind. This stretch of coast is exposed to the wind, so dawn sessions or the wet season, when glassy mornings are common, give you the best shot at clean conditions. The reef can work through most of the tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This one is strictly for experts, as the shallow reef and powerful barrels leave little margin for error. The lineup tends to stay fairly quiet, so when it's on you won't be jostling for waves.
