Overview
Bunkers is a thick beachbreak peak on the Humboldt County coast that breaks over sand and throws both lefts and rights. When it gets big it takes on a bombora-like shape, and on its best days it can moonlight as a cold-water Sunset Beach, barrels and all. It comes into its own when the nearby North Jetty is too small, though it needs the same conditions as the rest of the peninsula to turn on. This is an expert-level wave.
When It Works
The peak draws swell from south to north (S-N), with a northwest swell the best match. It is usable from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 4.6 m / 15 ft and is moderately consistent, so count on worthwhile windows when the setup lines up. Getting out can be difficult, so pick your moment for the paddle.
Wind and Tide
Look for a southeast offshore wind to clean it up. Low tide works best here, and a rising tide is the better call.
Local Tips
Expect a busy lineup when it fires, and it rewards experienced surfers who can handle the paddle-out and the hold-downs. Shark attacks have occurred here, so surf with that in mind.
Access
There is a car park with free parking, plus showers to rinse off afterward.
