CC's surf guide

CC's is a surf spot located at Conway Flat, just south of Kaikoura. It's pretty accessible, making it a popular choice for local surfers. The area features a mix of options along the beach, with a focus on the river mouth where things can get interesting. If you're up for a bit of an adventure, you can also check out some more remote breaks to the north, like Oaro, which is tucked away in the mountains.

The surf here is mainly a hollow beachbreak with good peaks, especially at the rivermouth. It works best with east swell, but you can also catch some decent waves with northeast or southwest swells. The spot handles swell sizes starting around 1ft (about 0.3 meters) and breaks over sand. Surfers can ride both left and right here, with the best conditions usually showing up around mid to high tide. If the winds are coming from the west, you're in for a better session. This spot is suited for intermediate surfers, as the waves can get a bit tricky, especially close to shore.

Getting to CC's is straightforward. From Kaikoura, just head south on State Highway 1, drive over the Hundalee Hills, and turn left onto Claverley Road. Then make a right onto Conway Flat Road to reach the beach. There are multiple spots to check out along the way, so you're likely to find some fun peaks no matter where you stop. Also, staying on Claverley Road allows you to scout the north side of the Conway River for potential waves. Just keep in mind, it's a spot where more experienced surfers will have the edge since the breaks can get pretty close to the shore.

Wind certainty

Wind certainty tells you how much the weather models agree on the forecast.

  • High certainty: Models agree closely; forecast is reliable.
  • Medium certainty: Some disagreement; conditions may shift slightly.
  • Low certainty: Models diverge; treat forecast with caution.

We calculate this by comparing wind speed, gust and direction from multiple models (like GFS, ECMWF, Arome, and Harmonie) and seeing how closely they match. They are weighted, meaning that some models count more than others, depending on how good they are for a certain spot.

Forecast Cheat Sheet

Short on time? Focus on wave energy. It’s the best single metric to gauge how big and powerful the waves will be.

Click any table cell to jump to that forecast hour. The map will update with forecast arrows, so you can see if wind and swell direction are lining up.

Use the table sidebar to switch units for height and speed.

Log your surf sessions to compare forecasts with real sessions and sharpen future predictions.

On the map, click a metric label to bring that arrow to the front — handy when arrows overlap.

Models and Updates

Surfnerd blends multiple global and local wind and swell models using advanced interpolation and spatial techniques to create an "ensemble" forecast. Forecasts are refreshed hourly.

Surf Predictions

Our AI-driven algorithm scores surf quality, shown by green, orange, and gray dots. Each forecast hour is rated for wind, swell, and tide quality, then combined into an overall score. Here’s the scale:

Perfect
Good
Average
Bad or No Data

Session logs also feed the algorithm — the more you log, the smarter your forecasts get.
