Cannon Beach/Tolovana Beach surf guide

Cannon Beach and Tolovana Beach are popular spots located along Oregon's coast, just a short drive from Portland. This area is known for its scenic beauty featuring stunning sea stacks, like the famous Haystack Rock, which stands at 235 feet (76 meters) tall. As a tourist town, it can get pretty busy during spring, summer, and autumn, with visitors flocking for the views and beach access. However, the immediate shoreline is filled with hotels and private residences, which can limit public beach access in some areas.

The surf here is mostly beachbreak and is best when the conditions align. You'll find a mix of wave types breaking on sand and sometimes over boulders. The waves can range from waist high to overhead (roughly 1 to 2.5 meters), making it suitable for beginners and up. The optimal swell direction comes from the west, with favorable swell sizes that handle from around 3 feet (0.9 meters) to 8 feet (2.4 meters). With east winds being the best, you might catch some decent sessions at mid to high tides. The waves can break left and right, providing some variety for surfers paddling out. If you're looking for a more sheltered spot, head a bit south to Short Sands Beach where you might find less wind and more consistent conditions, although it can get crowded.

Crowds can be hit or miss, with Cannon Beach being less busy than Short Sands, especially during peak tourist seasons. Be aware that this area has seen shark activity in the past, so it's something to keep in mind when you're out in the water. Overall, Cannon Beach and Tolovana Beach offer a mix of fun surf and beautiful surroundings, making it a spot worth checking out if you're in the area.

Wind certainty

Wind certainty tells you how much the weather models agree on the forecast.

  • High certainty: Models agree closely; forecast is reliable.
  • Medium certainty: Some disagreement; conditions may shift slightly.
  • Low certainty: Models diverge; treat forecast with caution.

We calculate this by comparing wind speed, gust and direction from multiple models (like GFS, ECMWF, Arome, and Harmonie) and seeing how closely they match. They are weighted, meaning that some models count more than others, depending on how good they are for a certain spot.

Forecast Cheat Sheet

Short on time? Focus on wave energy. It’s the best single metric to gauge how big and powerful the waves will be.

Click any table cell to jump to that forecast hour. The map will update with forecast arrows, so you can see if wind and swell direction are lining up.

Use the table sidebar to switch units for height and speed.

Log your surf sessions to compare forecasts with real sessions and sharpen future predictions.

On the map, click a metric label to bring that arrow to the front — handy when arrows overlap.

Models and Updates

Surfnerd blends multiple global and local wind and swell models using advanced interpolation and spatial techniques to create an "ensemble" forecast. Forecasts are refreshed hourly.

Surf Predictions

Our AI-driven algorithm scores surf quality, shown by green, orange, and gray dots. Each forecast hour is rated for wind, swell, and tide quality, then combined into an overall score. Here’s the scale:

Perfect

Average
Bad or No Data

Session logs also feed the algorithm — the more you log, the smarter your forecasts get.
