Capbreton surf guide

Capbreton is a popular surf destination located on the south-west coast of France. This stretch of beach offers a mix of intense waves and varying conditions that attract surfers from all over Europe. The access is straightforward with a large car park and camping area just behind the dunes, making it easy to get to the surf. The beach gets quite crowded, especially when the surf is good, but there are quieter spots if you’re willing to walk a bit further south.

The surf here can be quite powerful, with waves ranging from about 1.2 meters to 2.4 meters (4 to 8 feet). The best conditions are found with west to northwest swells, and the waves tend to break both left and right over sandbanks. Bunkers is a well-known area here, favored for its barreling beach breaks. It's recommended to surf at low to mid tide, as that’s when the waves are most manageable for intermediate to expert surfers. There's a decent paddle around the defined peaks, so it's not too hard to find a wave. However, be prepared for a heavy experience, as the waves can be hollow and fast, offering the chance for a great barrel or a tough wipeout.

Autumn is the prime season for surfing at Capbreton, particularly from September to November. During this time, the conditions are generally best, and the crowd factor can vary from very busy when the surf is on to somewhat manageable when it’s smaller. The preferred wind directions are east, east-southeast, and southeast, which can help shape the waves nicely. Shortboards, fish, bodyboards, and even bodysurfing are all options here, so there’s something for everyone to enjoy, just keep in mind the competitive local vibe.
