Cape Romain Surf Forecast Guide

Cape Romain is the most exposed spot on the South Carolina coast, a lonely spit of sand set among vast salt marsh and wooded maritime islands. It mostly throws a left that peels into a deep-water channel, and it picks up surf the rest of the state never sees. The wave is highly fickle and easily undone by wind, but when it lines up it can be a genuinely good left, and it's especially well tuned to hurricane energy.

When It Works

The break draws swell from east to south-southeast (E-SSE) and works from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft. Autumn is the prime window, roughly late summer into early fall, with a shorter early-spring season on top. Because you're surfing an open-ocean shoal, there's plenty of current and you'll pretty much always be paddling.

Wind and Tide

Look for west (W) offshore wind, but keep in mind it blows out easily, so a clean window matters. The workable wind window runs from west to west-northwest (W-WNW). It surfs on low to mid tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.

Local Tips

The lineup stays quiet and can feel a little reserved. It's best suited to intermediate and expert surfers, and takes everything from shortboards and fish to funboards, longboards, and SUPs. The water is clean, but this is a serious place to surf: it's sharkier than average, the currents are strong, and there's no one around to help if you get hurt, so take real precautions.

Access

Getting here is difficult and only possible by boat. Before you head out to Cape Romain, it's worth letting the Coast Guard know in case you go missing.
