Chatarra surf guide

Chatarra is often viewed as one of the more notable surf spots in the Caribbean, especially if you're into left-hand waves. When conditions align right, it can serve up some of the best surfing experiences on the island. The spot works best with a northwest swell hitting the flat-ledged reef, delivering powerful left-hand barrels that can be both exhilarating and intimidating. Surfers need to be mindful that it requires a decent-sized swell to really come alive, so it's not always a reliable go-to.

The wave generally likes swells in the size range of 1.2 to 3 meters (or 4 to 10 feet) and is known for its left breaks. It can transform into an A-frame with north swells, but watch out—those sessions can get shallow and sketchy. Morning sessions are preferable for clean conditions, especially when the wind is coming from the southeast to southwest, which helps to make those lefts more manageable. Paddling out can be quite labor-intensive, so be prepared for a workout. It’s important to note that Chatarra sees crowds, particularly when it’s firing, and the local vibe can be pretty heavy, so respect is key out in the water.

Access to the spot is straightforward since you can park right there. Make sure you're experiencing it during the later summer and fall for tropical cyclone swells, or in the winter for more consistency. Just keep in mind that a good day here is generally for experienced surfers looking to tackle a challenging and thrilling surf session. It’s definitely not for beginners. Enjoy the session and keep your wits about you!

Wind certainty

Wind certainty tells you how much the weather models agree on the forecast.

  • High certainty: Models agree closely; forecast is reliable.
  • Medium certainty: Some disagreement; conditions may shift slightly.
  • Low certainty: Models diverge; treat forecast with caution.

We calculate this by comparing wind speed, gust and direction from multiple models (like GFS, ECMWF, Arome, and Harmonie) and seeing how closely they match. They are weighted, meaning that some models count more than others, depending on how good they are for a certain spot.

Forecast Cheat Sheet

Short on time? Focus on wave energy. It’s the best single metric to gauge how big and powerful the waves will be.

Click any table cell to jump to that forecast hour. The map will update with forecast arrows, so you can see if wind and swell direction are lining up.

Use the table sidebar to switch units for height and speed.

Log your surf sessions to compare forecasts with real sessions and sharpen future predictions.

On the map, click a metric label to bring that arrow to the front — handy when arrows overlap.

Models and Updates

Surfnerd blends multiple global and local wind and swell models using advanced interpolation and spatial techniques to create an "ensemble" forecast. Forecasts are refreshed hourly.

Surf Predictions

Our AI-driven algorithm scores surf quality, shown by green, orange, and gray dots. Each forecast hour is rated for wind, swell, and tide quality, then combined into an overall score. Here’s the scale:

Perfect
Good
Average
Bad or No Data

Session logs also feed the algorithm — the more you log, the smarter your forecasts get.
