Cloudbreak - Mamanucas surf guide

Cloudbreak, located in the Mamanucas, Fiji, is one of the most talked-about surf spots in the world. This legendary reef pass was once only accessible to surfers paying high daily rates at the Tavarua Island surf resort, but recent changes in the law have opened it up for more surfers to experience. With stunning scenery and the thrill of the waves, Cloudbreak attracts surfers looking for a challenging session.

The waves here can be pretty intense. Cloudbreak works best with a south-west swell and can handle swell sizes starting from about 3 feet (0.9 meters) up to much larger heights. It features a left-breaking reef wave that can be really powerful. The wave breaks over live coral, so it’s crucial to be aware of that. The best wind direction is southeast, which helps make the conditions a bit cleaner. Surfers should aim for low, mid, or high tide for optimal sessions. However, this is not a spot for beginners; it's more suited for expert surfers due to the tricky nature of the wave and the sharp reef.

When surfing Cloudbreak, you need to be prepared for various challenges beyond just the waves. Sharp live coral can cause nasty cuts, so make sure to watch where you fall. Also, keep an eye out for sea fog and other marine life that tends to hang around the reef. Don’t forget to pack plenty of water, sunscreen, and a hat to protect yourself from the sun while you enjoy your time at this remarkable surf spot.
