Overview
Colegio is Iquique's banner right, a thick, muscle-bound reef wave that breaks over uneven reef just opposite the main high school. It follows the local template of a vertical drop into a draining barrel, but sets itself apart by spinning down the line for a good 100 metres. In the morning glass it can look picture perfect, though it stays a serious, challenging wave the whole way through.
When It Works
Colegio needs at least head-high surf to start breaking and only gets better from there, handling swell up to the triple-overhead mark fairly effortlessly. It draws swell from south to southwest, with southwest (SW) the best match, and is usable from 1.8 m / 6 ft to 5.5 m / 18 ft. Consistency is moderate, but it fires fairly often when the swell lines up.
Wind and Tide
Look for northeast (NE) offshore wind. It handles most tides through the size range and prefers the push, so a rising tide is the better call, with high tide giving more room for error on the peak.
Local Tips
This is an expert-level wave, and less experienced surfers should be wary of the vertical drops and draining barrel section. Expect a moderately busy lineup of rippers and bodyboarders when it's firing, and show respect to the locals and the wave. Keep an eye out for clean-up sets that close out the channel and watch the outside indicator bomboras.
Access
The Vertical Surf Shop sits just across the road and is a main hangout, well stocked with surfing essentials.
