Las Urracas surf guide

Las Urracas is a surf spot located in Iquique, Chile, known for its unique reef break. It's a place where surfers can find a mix of challenges and fun, especially if you're at an intermediate level. The spot has a bit of an unpredictable vibe, with the waves often packing a punch as they come in from the southwest. The take-off zone can be a little tricky, so it's best to be prepared for what the ocean has to throw at you.

The waves here mainly break left, offering a walling quality that can occasionally barrel, especially on a good day. The right is less favored and tends to lead to a section called El Colegio further down. Ideal conditions for hitting the waves occur with a southwest swell, and the surf can hold its own even when the swell sizes reach around 5 feet (1.5 meters). Low to mid tides work best, and a favorable northeast wind can make your session even better. Just be mindful of the uneven reef below, as it can be a bit tricky and shallow in spots.

Be ready for some currents that can add to the excitement, and like many local spots, you might find yourself sharing the waves with a few others. The narrow paddle-out between the rocks is often used by surfers heading towards El Colegio. Overall, it's a unique surf experience with its own quirks, great for those looking to explore the waters of Iquique.
